Abstract

This project aims to explain how Walt Whitman's poetry, published in the ever-changing volume Leaves of Grass, shows a shift in his attitude towards U.S. westward expansion. The paper will examine how poems written during different attitudes toward manifest destiny, and how those different attitudes are reactions to an evolving political climate in the U.S.
